Au Pair Girls (Val Guest, UK, 1973)Au Pair Girls is a British sex comedy of the kind whose plot is summarised in the title. The misadventures of each girl are neatly interwoven, with each story in turn coming into sharper focus, a format which keeps the pace from dragging. The humour, such as it is, rests in the girls being far from ingénues; they turn out to be more worldly-wise than the stodgy old natives. To kick things off, the Swedish import conforms to cliché, and thus silently horrifies her new mistress, by marching to the bathroom stark naked within mere seconds of being shown the way. This one ends up being white-slaved to a harem, but the joke's on the aged oil Sheikh when she bounces up and down on his bed before running away. None of the girls are absolute stunners, but all are pretty, shapely, and charming. Though a few could do with some more sunshine, and fewer carbohydrates in their diet, as was typical of that era. All of them undress fully as per contract, in scenes that are enjoyable without containing any notable erotic excitement. It's a low budget production, workmanlike, but a little less lavish and more wooden than contemporary Hammer films for instance. The solid work of the supporting cast of minor names but familiar faces help lift it out of hopeless mediocrity. |
