An involuntary chorus of rattling crockery greets the arrival of Anna onto the stage of this dark and mordant Polish psychodrama. Take it as a warning not to be balancing your teacup on your knee while you're watching: you will spill it.

She's an extraordinary feline creature, graceful and shy, though not quite a mute as first hopes would have it. But maybe a blind girl? She has the most curious tentative gestures like an animal exploring the dark. But the host of this shabby gathering of middle-aged men (and one provocative young female) introduces her as his niece and sends her off to the kitchen so knocking that mystery on the head. She returns with a groaning platter of refreshments, though to no relief of social tensions.

It's a long preamble for a brief, inevitable, but terrifying scene. Doting Uncle puts sleepy head Anna to bed with the assistance of Malgorzata Niemirska who as we have already seen proves a dreadful influence on the young girl. I reckon Uncle acquitted himself well in the circumstances, with only one minor slip-up which could plausibly be put down to trying not to look.

From an episode of an epic TV serial about a Polish Division formed to fight alongside the Soviet Union against the Nazis. This scene is from the third part of the serial, but is not in the feature length edition.

It's a typical wartime brief romance. Anna is a trained nurse by the way so this probably isn't even her sexiest scene. She is certainly unclothed though, and showing some more of her unlikely body language, perhaps inspired by watching her rabbit sniffing lettuce.

An evocation of one of those pre-war pastoral idylls from a time when there were still people active who remembered them. The famously glorious Polish cinematography was starting to become just a wee bit chocolate-boxy by this time, but it's still a remarkably atmospheric and beautiful film.

The storyline is somewhat oblique (vague even) but this scene is in an international language. Anna has decided that today is the perfect day to leave the shelter of her favourite sylvan glade and bathe in the shallow and lazy waters without the encumberance of clothing. Wholesome and innocent in countenance she may be, but she wasn't born yesterday; before pulling her slip over her head she routinely checks no one is looking first. But did you spot the crucial error? Yep, she didn't look up. Every countrywoman should have this stencilled inside her frock: warning: small boys climb trees.

Not many films begin with the embalming of the naked corpse of the female lead. This typically lavish Polish historical drama is one of them. Our hero King Zygmunt marries Elizabeth Habsburg (Bozena Adamek), a pretty but sickly and somewhat unsatisfactory young thing who suffers seizures on her wedding night.

Enter Anna as the eponymous noblewoman, with whom Zygmunt falls in love to all round societal scandal but eventually marries and crowns his queen, the lady dying shortly thereafter (hence the embalming scene - most of the story is told in flashback as the Queen's mummified body makes its long journey to her burial place). A confusing and morbid production, but for some people out there I'm sure that's a plus.

This clip is a compilation, beginning with the ritual embalming of Anna's naked body. Then there's a bath scene, and a bed scene with a short but very sweet bum shot. The final scene of the film is a happy ending (it's a guess mind but I reckon it's all in the hero's imagination), Anna's mummy being unwrapped on a lakeside by her younger self.

Typically overheated chocolate-box period drama from Poland. One afternoon the homely Anna (dressed in attractive national costume) brings the reprobate hero a letter. What is in it? Anything important? We are not told, and the fact that the next moment he has his head buried between Anna's naked thighs offers no clue. For who wouldn't have done that anyway? There's just something about this woman...

At the risk of upstaging Anna the extract begins with our man feeding raspberries on a spoon to impossibly coquettish kitten-fancier Katarzyna Figura. Much to the horror of the older lady at the table. The poor old dear looks like she's in mourning too - probably for his sense of decorum. But to be fair, syphilitic old pervert he may be, but he's only fulfilling the fantasies of any red-blooded male. Even if twice in one tea break seems a little excessive.
