Ponderous Polish historical drama about the decline of noble families during times of change. Not a lot of action then, except for this pointless but nevertheless very welcome scene of headstrong young Iwona getting ready for bed.

Stoical Iwona endures having to wash herself and fully undress under the unrelenting gaze of an ageing female authority figure - while getting a right earful as well. And I bet those weren't the lady's reading glasses either. She must be a favourite auntie or something to get away with behaviour the girl thought she'd left behind in reform school. We stick around, skipping some 'talky' bits, to watch Iwona get up to shut out the draught from the window so no one catches cold, least of all herself with that ever-so thin nightie of hers...

Iwona and sweetly pretty Maria Probosz have a mistress / servant thing going on in this Polish historical drama. It comes easily when you're a Duchess I suppose. We've already seen some of her vicious little games with Alla Murina, and here she is now treading on the fingers of her blameless lady's maid. A couple of mood swings later (giggles and whispers on the bed!) she slings the girl out on her ear.

Missing out on naked sapphic action is a shame for we the viewers at home, but it turns out Iwona needed someone more conventionally romantic all along. Someone rugged, but tender and passionate too. A man to undress her so she scarcely notices, and carries her naked to the bed while he's still wrapped in winter furs. Clichéd, and let down by a reluctance to show pubic hair, still it's a scene with some nice touches, like Iwona's teasing foot play. Old grump lover boy didn't like that one did he!
