Drama from Poland set during evidently one of the more violent parts of the 17th century. Duchess Iwona Katarzyna Pawlak is a formidable young woman. She stands on gunsmoke-shrouded castle battlements and stamps her foot when people don't fire their cannons just the way she likes it. That kind of formidable. The sort of woman Lady Macbeth could have been. But attractive with it. Shame she's not quite right in the head.

Today she has a new favourite in servant girl Alla. How can you tell she's a favourite? Because the lady's eyes light up with glee every time someone commits a public outrage on the delicate young thing.

The Duchess invites Alla to her room to practise some of these outrages herself in private. Starting with a smile (I bet she reckoned it was one of her nice ones too, but I found it ever so slightly frightening) she's soon whipping Alla across the face with a feathery fan-type thing she's holding. Can you buy one in the shops I wonder?

After a brief interlude outside the castle featuring an anonymous girl as a reminder of the sort of thing that might happen to Alla if she doesn't watch her step we join her being tried for a witch (or something). The Duchess seems strangely indifferent at first to her little pet's sackcloth gown being ripped off in front of all those men, but I don't think she's entirely given up on her quite yet...
