Esperanza sneaks away from her domineering sister to spend some time with her young lover in a scene from this splendidly overheated Spanish shocker. The views of her body would be nothing special in an Italian film, but are surprisingly explicit for a film from Spain of the time. The second clip is just a brief one of a happy Esperanza at her dressing table.

Esperanza hams it up wildly in an early Iquino sex comedy which shows a marked Italian influence in the extent to which it is manic and incomprehensible. Early on our blonde-wigged glamourpuss explains to her hapless businessman catch just why a nice girl like her came to dress and act like a Salford barmaid. It's because she was born on a farm apparently; cue sepia footage of ravaged milkmaids.

This is a very tame effort compared to what the same director started churning out a year or two later, but certain scenes have an extra charm because of the coyness. Such as the one in the bathroom. Our man may seem overly tetchy about Esperanza flicking through a certain kind of magazine while soaking in the bath, but you can imagine the racket she'd kick up if she caught him doing the same.

A very Spanish black comedy about a middle-aged man who marries the boss's daughter. Only it's not so simple as it sounds, for the woman is somewhat plain, getting on in years, and incidentally mentally handicapped too. Yes there's some financial pressure involved in the match-up, but the touching thing is that our man, the retiring sort who likes his hobbies (the silkworms of the title, with an occasional nod towards stamp collecting), perhaps would have chosen Esperanza for a bride regardless. And why not? Weigh up the pros and cons: 1) inexpensive tastes and 2) cannot talk, versus 1) wets the bed and 2) tries to run away. Hmm. Part of the tasteless humour of the situation comes from the men who if they are not actually half-lusting after this woman are at least ambivalent about her attractions, the doctor with the wandering hands for instance.

The first clip is the wedding night scene. Our hero has his elderly mother on hand to help with the undressing. The bride turns out to be wearing splendid matron pants with an eye-catching camel-toe. What follows may be a fiasco, but the new husband's heart is in the right place even if nothing else is.

From the second clip it appears someone's been watching too much Buñuel, for it is a dream scene. A short but sweet one: Esperanza is being bathed by her husband (she has the chest to go with the soap suds) while everyone, bride's parents and parish priest included, proudly looks on.

Unlucky Esperanza has been sent to one of the toughest women's prisons in Spain. For the usual doesn't-really-count sort of crime of course (embezzlement I think - there you are, she didn't even stab anyone). She'll have to endure the familiar round of humiliations, deprivation, and violence. From the dreaded cold showers at induction all the way to mattress-burning riots. But with a searing earthiness that marks this a classic amongst the usual lightweight Franco-derived fluff.

Beginning at the beginning, Esperanza naturally has to strip naked for her shower at induction. Her companion is Beatriz Rossat, no stranger to casual nudity, and Esperanza's an old hand herself. And thanks to the nice fat lady who only gives the pair a cursory frisk down, the shower passes off with no incident more grueling than the chilly splash of the water.

Worse is to come. A spoon has gone missing in the refectory at meal time. Terrifying governess Trini Alonso is furious, and sends in a team of female guards to strip search every woman present. It's always nice when the lead actress doesn't shirk the group nudity scenes (cf. Vera Pap in Angi Vera). Esperanza shrugs off her prison issue smock dress with a bored oh-no-not-all-this-again gesture and stands in the background fully naked. No one is wearing any underwear of course.

During her imprisonment level-headed Esperanza has become something of an agony aunt for the other women convicts. She has made an especial girl friend in handsome blonde Bárbara Rey. It's not until they are both released that we finally get to see what we've been waiting for: full-on naked lesbianism. In quite pleasant surroundings too - none of that grubbing about in the coalshed they would have had to do back inside. Our girl doesn't really do her bit though; she's happy just to lie there on her back. No wonder Barbara walks out and leaves her like that, fully exposed, sweat drenched, and in tears. Knowing the female criminal psyche the argument was probably about money though.

Intimate Spanish comedy about a couple of very different women (Iliana Ross is the other one) operating a jet-set honey-pot scam. Esperanza lures her prey in a classic dowdy cardigan-and-spectacles combo. She reminds me of Patrícia Scalvi in Noite em Chamas. Not surprisingly she soon has a 'bite'; a distinguished cellist allows her to invite herself back to his hotel room for a recital beneath the spires of Gaudi's cathedral.

This man (the inimitable José Luis López Vázquez) turns out to be what she would probably call 'hard work'. For one thing he believes she actually wants to listen to him play. Esperanza, who hasn't got all day, has to resort to wantonly throwing gin over her blouse and demanding to use the shower. The simple bathroom misunderstanding she engineers is unexpectedly stimulating. It helps that the actress has such a hearty appetite for this stuff, and such a splendid figure too. But Vázquez can handle her. He's worked with Linda Lay, the guy's a pro.
